IGERT Fellow Robert Darrow presented in-progress research at the 2018 meeting of the Western Political Science Association in San Francisco, California on March 31. Robert's paper, "Renewable Power in Sight: The Politics of Visibility in Danish Wind Energy Development," was part of a panel on "controversial" energy projects. The paper, which is currently being revised for publication, engages with the social science literature on local opposition to wind energy installations, which has historically viewed the high visibility of wind turbines as an obstacle to public acceptance. Robert develops an alternative approach to thinking about the visibility of wind development, arguing that, in certain circumstances, it can be beneficial for raising awareness of sustainability and generating public support for the deployment of new technologies.
