Innovations in Offshore Wind

Jan van der Tempel graduated in offshore wind from Delft University of Technology in 2000. He worked on installation design of Horns Rev with offshore contractor Boskalis before returning to Delft to work on a PhD. In 2002 he invented Ampelmann, a full-motion compensation system to access offshore structures. He worked on Ampelmann as an “on-the-side” project during and after his PhD on Offshore Wind Support Structure design. Ampelmann took off in 2008 to become world leader in access systems.

Jan stepped down as CEO last April, to focus again on his passions: teaching and technology development. Teaching he does in his Industry Academy for the offshore energy industry. Technology development is covered by his new start-up: DOT. A radical new offshore turbine, replacing the heavy generator in the nacelle for a seawater pump. A cost saving of 50% is within reach and a medium scale prototype is under construction for onshore testing at the end of this year.

Jan will share his adventures on developing his innovations and his passion for offshore wind.
