IGERT Fellow Zana Cranmer and IGERT Director Erin Baker, with two co-authors, published a paper titled “A portfolio model for siting offshore wind farms with economic and environmental objectives” in  the European Journal of Operations Research. Siting offshore wind farms is a complex problem due to the wake interactions between wind farms. The paper optimizes the siting of offshore wind farms  off the New England coast. It shows that excluding sites from the portfolio (for competing uses) has nonlinear impacts on the profitability of the portfolio. It has the biggest impact on profits if excluded sites are grouped together or aligned parallel to the prevailing wind direction.
